People go to Dalat to climb hills, wade springs, look at pine trees, waterfalls and French colonial buildings and take in cool air. In the rainy season, near the end of the year, some drink, play cards or go to the night market, in central Dalat, to buy cheap clothes or look in souvenir shops. There is the famous Tung Coffee Shop, by 3/4 (3 April) Cinema, mainly playing music of the past. The sculpture side of Vietnamese modern art was not fully developed until the 1990’s. While an effulgent sculptural tradition 2,000 years old has thrived, with a Cham component, techniques applied to temples and communal houses in northern areas of Vietnam, techniques of the western highlands and the Khmer art in the southern region, modern art in sculpture seems to have hibernated through 90 per cent of the 20th century. ‘The principal tools are hammers used to kill, and knives to butcher the carcasses. The village begins its working day at three o’clock in the morning. First the dogs are stunned, then they are slaughtered, the hair is burnt off, and they are cut up ready for the kitchen.
