Defenders of the Eiffel name

(No.5, Vol.2 May 2012 Vietnam Heritage Magazine)

Mr Sylvain Yeatman-Eiffel, honorary president of the Association of the descendants of Gustave Eiffel, which promotes the memory of Gustave Eiffel and defends his image and heritage against improper uses, writes in reply to Vietnam Heritage’s question as to whether Mr Gustave Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower, was the designer of the Long Bien Bridge across the Red River at Hanoi. He says Mr Gustave Eiffel was not.
Mr Yeatman-Eiffel says that a few years ago he took part in a symposium in Paris concerning the preservation of the Long Bien Bridge. He says Mr Gustave Eiffel is the grandfather of his grandfather. He says his information about the bridge comes from the archive of Eiffel Cie, a company founded by Mr Gustave Eiffel. In 1889, Eiffel Cie was renamed Compagnie des é tablissements Eiffel, which was in turn renamed in 1893 Société de Construction Levallois-Perret, according to en.structurae.de, an on-line database on structural and civil-engineering works set up by Nicolas Janberg, a Franco-German bridge engineer.
The association of the descendants of Gustave Eiffel also posts on its website a list of works carried out in Vietnam by Mr Gustave Eiffel’s company. According to the list (http://www.gustaveeiffel.com/Ses_ouvrages/asie.html) about two dozen projects carried out between 1880 and 1898.
