Many times in the past, I have written of unique dining experiences in Ho Chi Minh City. Many of my accounts dealt with out-of-the way places to get good Vietnamese food at low or moderate prices.
In my experiences with hotel restaurants, many have been overpriced mediocrities. However, sometimes one finds a gem of a dining experience in an elite hotel. The Grand Hotel is such a gem. Many people in our city know it as an established and prestigious place. I had dinner there and the dining lived up to the hotel’s reputation.
My friend and I dined at the Chez Nous Restaurant on the first floor. Mr Thanh, the manager, took great care to ensure that our dining experience was quite enjoyable. To begin, our drinks, which included orange juice and a fruit juice mocktail, were refreshing and substantial. The appetizers, two salads Nicoise, reminded me of my times on that French Riviera city. The blend of eggs, tuna, lettuce, tomato and sauce were enough to satisfy and stimulate one for what was to come.
Our first course was soup. I ordered the creamed vegetable soup. One could taste the blended green and root vegetables in a creamy, substantial base. My friend really enjoyed her Vietnamese Seafood Soup, as well. Mr Thanh and his attentive staff made sure we were well-supplied with delicious warm bread and plenty of butter.
My entrée was the tenderloin steak, accompanied by mashed potatoes and assorted colourful vegetables. It tasted as good as it looked. The chef cooked it to perfection. It was medium rare and of perfect thickness and size. My friend enjoyed her Vietnamese pancakes.
For dessert, I ordered the Queen of Sheba cake and a chocolate milkshake. It was as good as its counterpart in Paris. The cake was thick, rich and very satisfying. The milkshake was smooth and refreshing. My friend ordered the Lemon Tart. That was quite enjoyable, as well.
The a la carte menu is quite extensive and has many items of different origins. It has high-quality Vietnamese offerings, as well as Italian fare and items of universal appeal, such as steak and substantial sandwiches. There is also a kids menu for people who come with family.
The two managers, Mr Trung and Mr Thanh, are great people and will do anything they can to make your dining experience quite enriching and enjoyable. The Chez Nous is a great place to dine. You can’t go wrong in coming here. Your only dilemma will be in choosing from many things you’ll like. You’ll want to try them again on later visits.
